Over the last year we’ve reached out to some of the lovely people that have chosen to use Charity Car and asked about their car donations. We’ve had some interesting and moving responses and wanted to share their stories with you…
“My car was donated to The Salvation Army because it was my father‘s favourite charity. He was Gwilym Llewellyn Williams, known as Bill to those who had trouble pronouncing it. He was a regular soldier in the RAMC for 21 years, which included World War II. He told me that whenever he and his fellow comrades returned to this country from overseas The Salvation Army were always at the ports with cups of tea and a stamped postcard so that family could be told of their safe return home.
I have in my possession the postcard he sent to my mother on his return to this country on the 1st of June 1940 following his evacuation from Dunkirk on a minesweeper – I was four years old at this time. I support this charity on a monthly basis as well as at Christmas time in his memory. He finished his service career in 1947 with the rank of Honorary Major and was twice mentioned in dispatches.”
“Janet’s story of her father’s experience with the Salvation Army is so heartwarming. It’s always special to hear how people’s lives have been positively affected by The work of The Salvation Army. As always, our mission is to provide care to those who need it, without prejudice, whatever that might look like. Every Salvation Army centre will be working to support whatever the needs of the community are, in that place. Constantly adapting, we focus on meeting the needs of the people around us, facilitating programs to help employment, homelessness, youth, families, elderly, those in debt, or suffering from addiction, the abused, enslaved or trafficked.
If like Janet, your life has been touched by The Salvation Army, we encourage you to donate, fundraise for us, or volunteer your time to your local Salvation Army centre. We also love to hear about these stories being shared via Charity Car, inspiring the community to care for each other through altruistic actions such as generously donating your car.
Thank you again Janet for your beautiful gesture and for honouring your father’s memory through the donation of your car.”
Emily Eekelschot – Senior Corporate Fundraising Manager at The Salvation Army, The United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland Territory
The Charity Car team was so moved hearing about Janet’s father and the significance of her donation to The Salvation Army, who had made such a difference to her father during the war. The Salvation Army describes itself as having a long history of working with people who are vulnerable and marginalised across the world, offering practical help for people without discrimination, sharing good news, seeking justice and reconciliation, caring for creation and nurturing disciples of Jesus. The services they offer are diverse and responsive to the realities of life in the communities they serve.
By donating your car, and choosing to support The Salvation Army, you could help a person in need fight homelessness, loneliness, abuse, injustice, addiction or poverty.
If you are thinking about donating an old car, you can find out more about how it works or go straight to choosing which one of our wonderful charity partners you’d choose to donate it to!
If you’ve donated an old car to charity and that car, or the person that drove it, had an interesting story, or maybe it’s just a charity that’s close to your heart for a special reason, we’d love to hear from you.
It would be great if you are happy to share your story with this community of people, but we’d like to hear from you either way – your stories are what drives the Charity Car team.
