Pregnancy Sickness Support is a national UK charity that was set up to support sufferers of Hyperemesis Graidarum – the most severe form of nausea and vomiting in pregnancy.
While nausea and vomiting in pregnancy is very common – affecting 70-80% of pregnant women, the extreme end of this condition is called Hyperemesis Gravidarum, which is a potentially life threatening condition that can have a profound affect on the sufferers health and well being. Historically pregnancy sickness in any form was thought to be a psychosomatic condition, and although it was been proven otherwise and there are now medicines to help, shockingly there are still many GP’s and midwives who are mis-informed and sadly many women still come across unsympathetic health professionals who are ignorant of current treatment methods.
Pregnancy Sickness Support runs a national support network for women suffering any degree of nausea and vomiting in pregnancy. It is essential women and their partners have access to support and comfort as the condition can be very isolating, with women often left feeling misunderstood and alone for months on end when housebound.
The charity operates a helpline for both pregnant women and their loved ones. They also have a physical network of staff made up of volunteers who have first hand experience of the condition. Pregnancy Sickness Support can discuss treatments with doctors and give advice on coping strategies to use at home. They also run official training programs for healthcare professionals.
