STAND: Empowering Mobility and Independence in Africa
At STAND, formerly known as Legs4Africa, they transform lives by enhancing the mobility and independence of amputees across Africa. STAND’s mission is to provide high-quality prosthetic legs and holistic rehabilitation services to those in need, fostering self-reliance and community contribution.
STAND began its mission in 2013, starting with the delivery of a single prosthetic leg to The Gambia. Since then, they have expanded their efforts significantly. Gabu Jarjue, the sole prosthetist in the region, shared, “Giving someone a prosthetic leg is like giving someone back their life again. It never gets boring.” Thanks to continuous donations and evolving support services, the charity has been able to keep him busy ever since.
In the UK, STAND repurposes prosthetic legs that would otherwise be discarded due to EU regulations. These valuable components are collected and sent to various African countries, including Tanzania, Ghana, The Gambia, and Senegal. Since 2013, they’ve gathered over four thousand artificial legs, enabling countless amputees to lead more productive and fulfilling lives.
“A prosthetic leg has a tremendous ability to change a life. It gives an amputee a chance to stand up, walk again and get back into work.”
Tom Williams – STAND Founder
Your old car donations can significantly contribute to building reliable systems and infrastructures that provide prosthetic equipment, rehabilitation, and ongoing support for amputees. In regions where amputees often face trauma and marginalisation, STAND works tirelessly to empower individuals and dispel stigmas, proving that disability does not equate to inability.
“STAND would like to say a ginormous thank you to everyone at Charity Car, including their wonderful clients who recycle their cars so we can recycle prosthetic legs. Through your generosity, hundreds of limbs have been saved from landfill and shipped over to people who need them in sub-Saharan Africa. Together, we are truly getting people back on their feet. Thank you for caring, thank you for your selflessness, and thank you for supporting people with limb differences on the African continent.”
