Home-Start schemes are rooted in the community they serve and exist to help struggling parents give their children the best start in life they can. The Telford and Wrekin branch of the charity is managed locally but is supported by the national organisation Home-Start UK.
All of Home-Start believes that children need a happy and secure childhood to achieve their full potential, and that parents play the key role in giving their children that good start in life. Despite many parents being desperate to do that, they often find themselves fighting against the odds.
Home-Start Telford and Wrekin supports parents with at least one child under the age of 5 dealing with issues such as disability or sickness, mental health, multiple births, isolation, domestic abuse or difficult relationships. Just heading out to the shops when you are dealing with one of these issues can be a struggle, and Home-Start gives parents the confidence to make the 'impossible' possible.
The charity provides a unique service. It trains volunteers, who are usually parents themselves, to support families with one-to-one regular visits. Informal, friendly and confidential support and advice is given at families' homes in which ever area of family life they need help. That might be emotional support, direct support for the children in the family, or practical help with daily life - anything from resolving problems or establishing routines to cooking and playing.
Home-Start supports each parent as they grow in confidence, strengthening their relationships with their children and widening their links with the local community. The charity also provides support at meetings with outside agencies.
The charity has proven to have a long-lasting, positive impact on the development of the children and the health and welfare of the entire family that they serve.
