Emmaus North East provides a home and meaningful work for up to 15 companions (formerly homeless people) in South Shields.
Emmaus is a homelessness charity that provides much more than just a bed for the night. Emmaus enables people to work their way out of homelessness through meaningful work and a stable home for as long as it’s needed – helping people who have experienced social exclusion to regain their self-esteem and find a positive way to move forwards with their lives.
Emmaus North East is one of 29 Emmaus communities across the UK that believes homeless and socially excluded people have something valuable to offer. By encouraging companions, as residents are known, to use and develop their skills, Emmaus can help them make positive changes to their own life and the community around them.
Your old car donation to Emmaus North East will help the charity to welcome previously homeless adults to its community in South Shields, providing accommodation for up to 15 formerly homeless people, ready to make a fresh start. As well as a home, the charity provides work, education and training to help them to gain employment in the future.
Companions work in the Emmaus North East social enterprise, which includes charity shops in Low Fell and Hebburn, a house clearance service, delivery and collection services and furniture and household goods recycling. Not only do these services help Emmaus North East companions, but the projects also provide local jobs and make a positive contribution to the local community and economy. By helping to address homelessness and unemployment in the North East, this Emmaus community will save the taxpayer over £500,000 every year.
While Emmaus North East aims to be self-funding within 5 years using the money generated through its social enterprise, your old car donations will help the charity establish itself, support its residents and in the future offer more companion places. As a flagship social enterprise in the North East, this Emmaus is working in partnership with local councils, other charitable bodies and community groups such as schools and churches to truly enrich and involve the local community.
