Supporting Dry January

We’re excited to be starting another year looking after your generous old car donations to charity, and sharing the stuff that makes us tick… And that’s the good causes we work with, especially when they are looking out for all of us!

Our Partner of the Month for January 2020 is Alcohol Change UK. They want a future in which people drink as a conscious choice, not a default, and where those who drink too much, and their loved ones, have access to high-quality support, without shame or stigma.

When every day 20 people die as a result of their drinking, and alcohol misuse costs the NHS in England £3.5 billion each year, that future is something we should all be working towards, because alcohol harm is real but not inevitable. Your old car donations can help right now and fund campaigns like Dry January!

There’s a pretty mixed bag of us here in the Charity Car office; different backgrounds, genders, diets and beliefs, but the majority of us like an alcoholic drink. Many of us associate drinking with good things - relaxing, socialising, or celebrating. But working with Alcohol Change UK has given us an insight into how healthy it is simply to review our drinking. Dry January is a chance to do just that and join the thousands of people giving their body a break and understanding their drinking pattern.

If you’re ready to check how healthy your drinking is you can do this quick quiz.

Or maybe you’d just like to test your knowledge on alcohol.

If you decide to give Dry January a try you may well find there are some big benefits – studies have shown people reporting improved general health, better sleep and more energy. Many people lose weight and experience better concentration as well as saving money! And don't forget there'll be more designated drivers!

Not that all those reasons aren't important enough, but as uncomfortable as it is to read, alcohol is a causal factor in more than 60 medical conditions, including: mouth, throat, stomach, liver and breast cancers; high blood pressure, cirrhosis of the liver; and depression. But the good news is that stopping or cutting down drinking is instantly reducing the risk of these conditions.

Even if you don’t take part in Dry January, supporting Alcohol Change UK will help create more informed and balanced drinking cultures across the UK and ultimately help to improve and save lives.

We’d love to see old car donations help Alcohol Change UK to achieve this. They’ll use your donations to provide online advice and support to thousands of people in search of help each year. Funds could also go towards researching alcohol harm and communicating that research, including campaigns for evidence-based policies such as the recent improvements of clearer alcohol labelling, better funding for alcohol treatment and support, and common sense rules around alcohol marketing.

Whatever you can do to support our Partner of the Month, thank you. Here's to a great 2020, where we all treat ourselves well and use our old cars for good!
