It's September! Back to the books... on wheels?

Even if you are decades past going 'Back to school', September will always have the same meaning for most of us! If you have kids of that age you've probably spent the last few weeks getting uniform, stationery and of course books ready for the start of the new school year... It might be hard work at the time but we are all lucky enough to take literacy, and access to books, for granted.

Charity Car's brilliant Partner of the Month for September - The Book Bus - was set up to spread the essential life skill of literacy in developing countries, and uses your old car donations to help tackle the global literacy crisis.

Literacy and education are essential to lifting people out of poverty. Reading creates opportunities for children, including access to employment, improved health and the ability to play a more meaningful role in community life. However, The Book Bus tells us that UNESCO has estimated 250 million children in the world remain illiterate, and this global crisis costs developing countries $129 billion a year!

It's amazing to think that donating an old car could help to fund literacy in a developing country... In 2006, publisher Tom Maschler converted a Leyland Tiger bus into a mobile children's library to help improve literacy in communities in sub-Saharan Africa. The charity now has a fleet of six book buses that travel through Zambia and Malawi, providing children with a happy, stimulating and safe environment where they can discover the joy of reading, often for the first time.

Donating an old car to The Book Bus will help keep its fleet on the road (you know how much the Charity Car team love a vehicle connection!) delivering books to the children who need them most.

The charity also uses funds to create reading corners, build libraries and work with teachers and local education authorities to measure and improve child literacy. It's not just about making sure children have access to books, but that they feel inspired to read, enjoy and learn from them.

The Charity Car team was impressed to hear The Book Bus is aiming to equip 10,000 children in Zambia and Malawi with functional literacy skills by the end of 2020. We hope that car donations will help fund that incredible goal and the life-changing skills this charity will deliver mean those children escape the cycle of poverty and enjoy a brighter future.
