Emmaus makes a home at Charity Car

Inspired by World Homeless Day on the 10th October, our Partner of the Month is Emmaus. Many charities claim to have a unique perspective on how they help their cause, but this organisation makes a strong case…

In the words of Emmaus Coventry & Warwickshire’s Trustee Tim:

"It's not an ordinary homelessness charity. We don't just give people a bed for the night, we give them a reason to get out of it."

A home, meaningful work and a sense of belonging are what has resulted in Emmaus’ success stories and what made the Charity Car team so excited about welcoming them to our car donation scheme. Not only do we work with Emmaus UK - the country’s umbrella Emmaus organisation - we also partner four of its regional charities.

Emmaus Coventry & Warwickshire, Emmaus North East, Emmaus Oxford and Emmaus Village Carlton (in Bedfordshire) all operate individually but under the same principle – providing formerly homeless people with support, a home for as long as they need it and meaningful work and training in their social enterprises. This approach helps people who have experienced social exclusion to regain their self-esteem and find a positive way to move forward with their lives with new skills and confidence.

The entire organisation currently supports more than 815 formerly homeless people across the UK. Your car donations could go a long way to increase the number of people Emmaus charities are able to support and to help nurture current companions (as Emmaus residents are referred to) and help get their life on track.

As well as looking after their practical needs and their mental well-being with counselling sessions and one-to-one support, a huge part of the charities’ work in every region is to ensure companions make a positive contribution to their community. A ‘solidarity’ service is offered in every region from clearing up houses and gardens for people who are disabled, to supporting other charities that need decorating services or furniture. This work is invaluable for Emmaus companions as it can be fundamental to rebuilding lost self-esteem - proving that they can truly make a difference to the lives of others.

Your old car donations could enable them to experience that feeling and give them the confidence to move forward while helping the wider community.

Emmaus Companions

We’ll leave you with a quote from Emmaus companion Gavin:

“Emmaus feels like home. The culture of being kept busy really helps; every morning I wake up knowing that I will be doing something that I like doing. Whilst I’ve been here I’ve been on training courses and built up skills. I have worked on the vans, delivering and collecting donations and also enjoy serving customers on the shop floor and assisting in the office. I’ve done a lot of running away in my life; Emmaus has given me stability and hope for the future.”

An old car donation generating £160 could provide a formerly homeless person with accommodation for 4 months… that’s a lot of support from one set of wheels.
