Our Charity Car partners are all special in their own way, but not many causes can say their volunteers climb mountains to help people... except this one! Scottish Mountain Rescue represents 23 volunteer Mountain Rescue Teams (including Scottish Cave Rescue) providing a world class, front line, voluntary search and rescue service that is available any hour, any day and in any weather.

This incredible organisation, which relies on over 800 volunteers to provide life-saving services, also relies on monetary donations from the public - being mostly funded by voluntary contributions. As a new partner of Charity Car, with your donations, old cars can help fund these teams so they can continue to deliver a high standard of service and literally save lives.

Scottish Mountain Rescue was founded in 1965 to provide a civilian mountain rescue service in Scotland, liaising closely with the Scottish Government, Police Scotland, Maritime and Coastguard Agency, Scottish Ambulance Service, and other partner agencies involved in land based search and rescue. The heart of mountain rescue in Scotland is its volunteers. Team members and leaders across Scotland give up their time, ready for deployment at a moment's notice, to provide a free service to anyone who needs assistance.

The Charity Car team wanted to get an idea of the volume of work this organisation handles and they couldn't believe the numbers... The Chair of Scottish Mountain Rescue, Damon Powell, told them: "Last year Mountain Rescue teams across Scotland responded to 579 incidents, covering a total of 39,728 hours and assisting 776 people in challenging and at times hostile environments. The amount of time, dedication and support that went into making that possible is extraordinary and its only the tip of the iceberg in terms of voluntary hours committed.

To ensure team members arrive on the hill they will have already devoted many hours to fundraising, training, equipment maintenance and the increasing bureaucratic requirements of a modern day mountain rescue team. All of their achievements are thanks to the dedication, generous support and time that over 800 members of the teams contributed. As you can imagine, we would prefer these wonderful people to spend their time training rather than fundraising so it's great to find another way the public can support the service directly. Charity Car will allow people to dispose of their old car in an environmentally responsible way while helping to fund our work, so we are delighted to be partnered with this forward-thinking scheme."

Maybe you've been planning a bit of walking or climbing over the festive season, or maybe you've had the luck of experiencing help from one of these teams in your past... maybe this is the cause for you to bear in mind when your car has reached the end of its life so it can help save one.
