Hunting for a celebration everyone can enjoy with Coeliac UK

November is a fantastic month for celebrations. We love that here in the UK we can enjoy events that span history and culture from Bonfire Night and St Andrew's Day, to Thanksgiving and Diwali... and a highlight is always the fantastic food that goes with those special days. However, it's not easy for many people that live with coeliac disease to relax into those celebrations.

Coeliac disease is not an allergy or an intolerance but an autoimmune disease where the body’s immune system damages the lining of the small bowel when gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley and rye, is eaten. There is no cure and no medication; the only treatment is a strict gluten-free diet for life.

The Charity Car team knows a few people that suffer with this disease and have seen how restricting it can be. While some restaurants and shops are getting much better at providing great gluten-free alternatives, there are still many situations where people with the condition are finding barriers to being able to access food that is right for their diet.

Coeliac UK is the only charity in the UK, which supports individuals with coeliac disease. It receives no government funding and is dependent on the generosity of the public to fund practical support, awareness raising and research into treatments for the condition. With 12,000 newly diagnosed members joining each year, they are kept rather busy!

Whether or not you have an old car to donate to this cause, a celebration you can be a part of and help Coeliac UK at the same time is at its annual Treasure Hunt on 26 November 2016 in London, which the whole family can enjoy.

Each team will receive a list of clues and a map of central London so they can explore the capital following the clues to eventually reach a secret hideout! You can find out more and sign up on their website.

Even more exciting, as far as the Charity Car team is concerned, is the meal that sponsors of the event, La Polenteria - the award winning gluten-free Italian kitchen - will be supplying as part of the event. Looking at the restaurant's menu is motivation enough!

We hope you all enjoy the celebrations coming up at the end of the year and of course stay healthy.
