Charity Car Celebrates International Day of Charity

As happy as we are to mark National Burger Day with a funny car-related photo, or much more importantly share the awareness days and weeks over the year that are significant to our charity partners, International Day of Charity is up there as a big one in our calendar!

Cynically, a lot of people may think that awareness days are created purely for marketing purposes. Well, we sort of agree actually, but when you are promoting genuinely good causes isn't that something to be celebrated and shared?

Here at Charity Car, we think we are the lucky ones in our business, as we get to work with a huge range of different but all extremely worthy organisations that have so much to tell us. Whether they've been founded by health experts, parents, animal lovers or environmentalists, they are all so passionate about their cause, and we are here to provide another way that the public (you!) can donate to them that they may never have used before. Old cars converted into funds that could fund cures for diseases, support communities, protect environments, save species and improve lives. We think it's amazing and we love knowing a car at the end of its life could help transform a new life anywhere on the planet!

The International Day of Charity wasn't created by a PR firm, Hungary proposed its introduction to the United Nations (UN) in the lead up to the Agenda on Sustainable Development, and it began in 2012. The UN had recognised that eradicating poverty is the greatest global challenge we face and key to sustainable development. September 5th was chosen to commemorate Mother Teresa of Calcutta (who passed away on this date) as she had received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 "for work undertaken in the struggle to overcome poverty and distress".

The UN called for a 'spirit of strengthened global solidarity', which you can't deny packs a descriptive rallying punch! Everyone can play a role in the six critical areas it addressed: people, planet, prosperity, peace, and partnership. Movingly, the UN described these elements having the potential to transform our lives and our planet by providing the framework needed for philanthropic institutions to enable all people to contribute to the betterment of our world. In charitable terms they could have 'dropped the mic' at that point!

Let's lighten the mood... the UN's work is essential, but a little bit overwhelming, and all we really want to do today is encourage you to celebrate the good causes close to your heart. Whether it's a local hospice or an international animal welfare charity, tell some people you know about the great work they do, take that bag of clothes to your local charity shop, be proud to mark this truly international day on your Facebook account, or of course make a donation! Letting people know about our rather unusual donation method would be a great message to get out there - so many people still don't know their old car could be a donation for charity and we have so many incredible charity partners to choose from.

Happy International Day of Charity from the whole Charity Car team!
