March-ing for mothers and babies

Charity Car's Partner of the Month - Genesis Research Trust - could not be more fitting for a month that plays host to International Women's Day. This not-so-well-known charity works hard to raise money for the largest UK-based collection of scientists and clinicians who are helping to transform the lives of women and babies through medical research. A unique aspect of the charity is that at least half of their scientists are female. And the funds raised from old cars can now be used to help support this work through Charity Car.

Professor Robert Winston, who you will probably recognise as one of the UK's most referenced medical professionals and leading fertility experts, is the driving force behind this cause, which is tackling infertility, miscarriage, gynae cancers, stillbirth and prematurity.

While this area of research is so crucial for people to have a healthy start in life, only 0.2% of all charitable giving is donated to maternal medicine. We are hoping with Genesis Research Trust being our focus for the month it will help to increase exposure for this vital area of research and of course this unique way to donate - by getting rid of your old car and turning it into a new start in the most literal way!

We don't want to dwell on the sad side of this story but obviously the cause stems from the desperation and sadness of parents who lose babies, and the life-shattering impact that a disabled or seriously ill child can have on a family. Despite countless breakthroughs in medical science, no-one understands why some couples are unable to conceive and why some pregnancies end in tragedy. While for most of us, having a child of our own is the most fulfilling experience of our lives, so many couples are unable to experience that most profound of human wishes - to have a happy family. Genesis Research Trust, wants to give everyone the chance of a healthy family, and if you want to find out more, these stories are their inspiration.

The charity's research is ongoing, but individual projects are funded to target certain areas of maternal medicine to improve specific clinical practices and diagnosis procedures. For example, at the moment Genesis Research Trust is funding teams of researchers looking into the risk of pre-term birth after treatment for cervical pre-cancer. Another project is looking into the long term effects that the pregnant mother’s health can have on a child's future wellbeing - a phenomenon known as fetal programming.

This work is revolutionising biological medicine and it's pretty amazing to think an old car could help towards this truly innovative work.

The Charity Car team is excited about having this progressive charity on-board as our Partner of the Month and would love to hear from you if you decide to donate towards their goal of achieving happy healthy families.
