Documents and legal stuff
Do I need to provide the registration
documents for my car?
If your car is going to be recycled, and you have your V5C
registration document (log book), you should hand it over so that a
Certificate of Destruction can be issued. Don't worry if you
do not have the registration document as a Certificate of
Destruction can usually be issued without it. For more
information please read
'What is a Certificate of Destruction?'.
If we decide that auction is the best option for your car,
we will help you to complete the relevant section of the V5C
registration document (log book), which you should send to the DVLA
to notify them that you've disposed of your car
correctly.

After you have chosen to donate the value of your car to charity
What happens after I have arranged for my

What happens after I have arranged to
deliver my car to the recycling centre?
How long will it take to collect my car?
We endeavour to collect all cars within 7 days however it is
often much sooner than this, usually within 2 working days.
If you need your car to be collected urgently, please let us
know when you submit your car.
« Hide
What will
happen to my car once you've accepted it?
We will decide on the best route to get the maximum value from
your old car.
If it still has some life in it then we will auction it to
the highest bidder.
If the car has reached the end of its life then it will be
recycled at a licensed recycling centre. All scrap cars
are treated to remove any hazardous materials including oils,
batteries and tyres, which would cause serious environmental damage
if they ended up down the drain or in landfill.
As much of the scrap car as possible is recycled so that the 85%
recycling targets set by the EU can be met. It is a criminal
offence for Authorised Treatment Facilities to miss the EU
recycling targets. All of CarTakeBack's recycling centres
bear the 'Recycling Compliance Seal' to demonstrate their
compliance.

Facts and Figures
What is an Authorised Treatment Facility?
Authorised Treatment Facilities are sites which have been
licensed by the Environment Agency in England & Wales, the
Scottish Environment Protection Agency in Scotland or the Northern
Ireland Environment Agency in Northern Ireland, to de-pollute scrap
cars to standards set by DEFRA (the Department for Environment,
Food and Rural Affairs). Only these sites are permitted to
issue last owners with a DVLA Certificate of Destruction.
All of CarTakeBack's recycling centres are Authorised Treatment
Facilities.
« Hide
What is an
end of life vehicle?
An end of life vehicle is more commonly known as a scrap
car.
« Hide
What are the End of Life Vehicle
Regulations?
The End of Life Vehicle Regulations are designed to reduce the
impact that old cars have on the environment when they reach the
end of their useful life. The regulations were introduced in
two parts. The first set of regulations came into effect in 2003
and require end of life vehicles to be de-polluted, that is the
removal of all hazardous materials such as fluids, tyres and
batteries, at an Authorised Treatment Facility before any of its
parts or materials can be re-used or recycled. The second set
of regulations came into effect in 2005 and require both car makers
and Authorised Treatment Facilities to meet tough recycling targets
of 85% by weight per vehicle.
« Hide
Which types
of vehicle are not covered by the regulations?
Motorbikes (including motorbike based tricycles) and passenger
vehicles with a revenue weight over 3,500 kg or those that have
more than 9 seats, do not require a Certificate of Destruction and
recycling targets do not have to be met, but they should be treated
at an Authorised Treatment Facility.
« Hide
Which types
of vehicle do the regulations cover?
The End of Life Vehicle Regulations apply to vehicles which are
in class M1 or N1 and three wheeled vehicles as defined in EU
directive 92/61/EEC; this means passenger vehicles with 9 seats or
less with a revenue weight under 3,500kg, vans with a revenue
weight under 3,500kg and 3 wheeled vehicles.
